LIGHTWEIGHT SMALL-FRONTAL-AREA ACCESSORY AND DRIVE SYSTEM PROGRAM.
Abstract
The object of the program was to determine improvements in accessories and their drive systems that can reduce aircraft turbine engine weight and frontal area. Included are studies on fuel systems, lubrication systems, accessory drive systems, starters, and electric and hydraulic power generation. The J52 engine was used as a baseline for evaluating weight and frontal area improvements. One hypothetical J52 with improved accessories mounted on the existing gearbox shows engine weight and frontal area reduced by 4.5% and 9%, respectively. Another version utilizing a miniaturized gearbox and lightweight accessories offers 8% reduction in engine weight and 14% in frontal area. Four 'gearboxless' engine concepts are presented offering reductions in engine weight and frontal area up to 11% and 30%, respectively. The reductions in engine weight and frontal area disclosed in the report are substantiated by preliminary design results and by proposals from accessory manufacturers. Because of the magnitude of the reductions possible using the gearboxless engine concept, it is recommended that studies of this concept be continued and that component development efforts be initiated.
