RESEARCH DIRECTED TOWARD EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF ELECTROPHORESIS IN PLASMAS.

Abstract

Results obtained from an experimental investigation of electrophoretic and cataphoretic phenomena in dc discharges are summarized. Electrophoresis studies have been conducted on helium, neon, argon, krypton and xenon. Experimental results of the longitudinal pressure gradient when compared with the Leiby-Oskam volume force theory at high pressures and low currents shows excellent agreement. Cataphoresis has been investigated experimentally in helium-neon and helium-argon mixtures. For both mixtures, analytic expressions are obtained for the functional dependence of the minority atoms in the axial direction. The analysis which involves the continuity equation takes into consideration the production and loss mechanisms of the minority ions. (Author)
