ADRENAL CORTICOSTEROIDS IN SUBMAXILLARY FLUID.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the corticosteroids in submaxillary gland fluid in man. Human submaxillary fluid was collected from 2 to 4 hours after ACTH simulation, and large batches were analyzed by quantitative paper chromatography for adrenal corticosteroids. The major steroids present were cortisol and cortisone, but a small amount of tetrahydrocortisol was found in two out of the three experiments. The concentrations of cortisol and cortisone after ACTH treatment were similar to those previously found in parotid fluid. The absence of any glucuronide-conjugated steroids (the form used for renal excretion) suggests that submaxillary gland secretion of these steroids is not an excretory process. (Author)
