MODEL TESTS OF THE LOCKHEED AIR-SEA CRAFT.

Abstract

A 1/25-scale model of the air-sea craft was built and tested to determine its landing and take-off characteristics in smooth water and in irregular waves. The hydrodynamic configuration was optimized by a computer study and by smooth-water constant-speed tests, which developed the size, location, and angles of attack of the planing surfaces for stable operation. Static and dynamic loads as well as the motions of the craft were measured, over a range of operating conditions, in tests conducted with a yawed model and in tests involving moded take-offs and landings up to sea state 5. The results indicate the air-sea craft to be a feasible and practical vehicle for carrying out the ASW mission. (Author)
