STATE-OF-THE-ART STUDY OF SOLID-STATE MICROWAVE GENERATORS,

Abstract

The report presents a survey of the state of the art of solid-state microwave generators operating at frequencies in the range 1 to 100 GHz as reported in the literature as of 1 September 1968. The devices discussed include avalanche transit-time diodes, Gunn effect diodes, limited space-charge accumulation diodes, transistor oscillators, varactor multipliers, and tunnel diode oscillators. The basic physical principles of operation of the avalanche transit-time, Gunn, and LSA diodes are presented in some detail. The continuous-wave output powers available from varactor harmonic generators are shown to predominate in the range of 1 to 10 GHz. In the frequency range 10 to 100 GHz, the avalanche transit-time diode is presently superior to its competitors, especially in continuous-wave operation. (Author)
