THE DOD STRATEGIC-DEPLOYMENT PROBLEM: FORMULATION AND TECHNIQUES, 1967-1968,

Abstract

The paper is a compilation of three short technical descriptions of various aspects of the Department of Defense strategic-deployment linear programming work. The individual sections describe a related set of problems: What were the DOD strategic-deployment problems and solution techniques in 1967. What were the subsequent model versions, and how did these formulations occur, and finally, what is the matrix-generation technique that has been employed. The document is designed to provide an informative description of the approach, techniques, applications, and some problems encountered in the use of large-scale mathematical programming in this area. Of particular note is the matrix-generator concept. (Author)
