A CRITERION FOR DETERMINING AIR-FLOW SEPARATION FROM WIND WAVES.

Abstract

Based on laboratory studies of wind-wave interactions, a criterion for determining air-flow separation from wind waves is proposed. The air separates from waves having a phase velocity less than the shear velocity, which characterizes the turbulent wind field. The successful application of this criterion to the analysis of oceanic data is herewith demonstrated. (Author)
