AN OPTICAL BOMB STUDY OF THE COMBUSTION OF SOLID PROPELLANTS IN HIGH ACCELERATION FIELDS.

Abstract

An experimental study of the effects of acceleration fields on the burning rate of solid propellant grains is being conducted. A variety of formulations are being studied over a range of pressures and acceleration loadings; the results will eventually be used to evaluate theoretical models of the process or to form the basis for improved models. The acceleration vector, produced by spinning a disc-shaped propellant in a large volume optical bomb, can be directed perpendicularly into or away from the burning surface. Three formulations have been studied to date under both vector orientations. (Author)
