DEEP INSTRUMENT PACKAGES.

Abstract

A Deep Instrument Package has been developed capable of measuring, simultaneously during a lowering, a number of important properties of the ocean. The deep multiplexer unit has provisions for inputs from up to seven commercial oceanographic sensors, the main requirement being that the sensor output be in terms of frequency shift rather than amplitude variations. The equipment is lowered by means of conventional double armored single conductor oil well logging cable, approximately 1/4 inch diameter and up to 30,000 feet long. In practice the maximum depth capability is usually limited by the pressure ratings of the sensors themselves to 20,000 feet or less. The depth is continuously monitored with high precision by an inverted echo sounder mounted on the package and beamed at the surface. The cable serves to transmit the depth and sensor signals to the ship where they are processed and recorded on an incremental tape recorder in a form easily processed on a computer. Real time outputs are also provided for monitoring purposes. (Author)
