SYNTHESIS AND STUDY OF MALATES AS LOW-HYGROSCOPIC BRAKE FLUID COMPONENTS.

Abstract

The object of the work was to synthesize and study various hydroxyesters as potential components of low-hygroscopic brake fluids. Seventeen diesters of malic acid were prepared via modified Fischer esterification and in nearly quantitative yields. They were subjected to screening tests. None proved entirely satisfactory, although several of the malates exhibited properties which may be desirable in blending. (Author)
