AN INVESTIGATION OF CONTRACTION AND REFLEX INHIBITION OF THE QUADRICEPS MUSCLE GROUP IN DISTENSION OF THE KNEE JOINT.

Abstract

A study was undertaken to investigate the occurrence of reflex inhibition of the quadriceps femoris muscle following a voluntary contraction of this muscle when there is associated distension of the knee joint. A comparison was made of the contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle of patients exhibiting unilateral knee joint effusion with that of the quadriceps femoris muscle of the contralateral extremity. The contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle in conjunction with knee joint effusion as a group, reacted differently from the contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle of the control group in the absence of knee joint effusion. This difference signified the occurrence of reflex inhibition of the quadriceps femoris muscle. (Author)
