A SIMPLIFIED DYNAMIC ANALYSIS FOR THE ATTITUDE DESCRIPTION OF A SPIN-STABILIZED PROBE, EXISTING IN A REAL ATMOSPHERE, AND UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF VARIABLE AERODYNAMIC LOADING.

Abstract

Recently space research has been involved in the test and evaluation of a series of high-altitude probes with a variety of objectives. One of the common mission requirements is to define and maintain attitude control in rarefied and zero atmosphere environments. With little or no aerodynamic forces available a vehicle must rely on an alternate means to establish and maintain a specified attitude in the presence of random disturbances. In order to evaluate the behavior of an unsuccessful flight and/or suggest corrective design measures, it is essential that the engineer be able to identify the disorder. It is the purpose of this paper to lay the groundwork necessary for the understanding of spin-stabilized motion, to develop a capability to predict problem areas prior to launch, and to evaluate the behavior of a vehicle during flight.
