EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF COOPERATIVE COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM. FLIGHT TEST DATA FOR PHASE II TESTS.

Abstract

The CAS (Collision Avoidance System) is an altitude-range device employing the ground-reflection method to obtain range data. Prior flight test data had demonstrated the validity of the basic system concepts and the adequacy of the ground-reflection technique. The purpose of these Phase II flight tests was to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the complete functional research model to show the capability of the system concept, to determine the system's performance limitations, and to provide the necessary data for direction of further development effort. The Phase II flight tests confirmed the basic system concepts and demonstrated the system feasibility over all types of terrain, including high mountains. The only inherent system limitation was low altitude; a significant range limitation occurs below about 4000 feet because of the ground-reflection geometry. Frequent erratic operation occurred over highly-populated areas because of attendant high impulse noise levels. Noise suppression circuits must be added to an operational equipment. (Author)
