MODULATION AND DEFLECTION OF LASER BEAMS,

Abstract

The design and performance of electrooptic modulators is discussed. Comparison is made of various materials. A practical modulator using ADP is described which requires only 220V drive for 100% modulation. Its drive power requirement is of the order of 2W per MHz of bandwidth. The power requirements of both the analogue electrooptic prism and the binary digital types of laser beam deflector are treated. A novel digital multiplication deflection scheme is proposed which overcomes some of the difficulties of the analogue and binary schemes. Finally rotating mirror prisms are shown to be capable of being developed into a practical means of deflecting laser beams. (Author)
