AVERAGED STATIONARY PRINCIPLES.

Abstract

Solutions of certain hyperbolic systems of nonlinear partial differential equations are discussed. For convenience only two independent variables are considered, namely x and t, and if the equations have coefficients which are independent of x and t one can seek plane wave solutions of the form f(kx-omega t), with k and omega constant. If the coefficients have only slow explicit dependence on x and t one no longer has plane wave solutions, but one can seek solutions in the form of almost plane waves, f(theta), where k(x,t) is identically equal to theta sub x, omega (x,t) is identically equal to minus theta sub t are slowly varying functions of x and t.
