A DIRECTED RANDOM PARAGRAPH GENERATOR,

Abstract

The document gives a description of a computer program for generating strings of sentences that have the properties of 'real' discourse. The program implements certain linguistic assumptions about 'development' and 'cohesion' among sentences. The generator consists of two major parts: a data conversion program for establishing compact data tables with associative links and a generation program for synthesizing sentences. The objective is to gain a better theoretical understanding of the interrelationship of sentences in a connected discourse.
