THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING STRAIGHT.

Abstract

Examples of open problems from three fields are used to discuss the thesis that our imperfect understanding of closely related objects is at the root of the difficulties encountered in solving the problems. The fields discussed are: (1) arrangements of lines, or of pseudolines, in the projective plane; (2) boundary complexes of polytopes, and combinatorial spheres; (3) boundary complexes of centrally symmetric polytopes, and combinatorial spheres with a center of symmetry.
