THE PROPAGATION OF SHOCK WAVES IN NON-UNIFORM MEDIA (APPROXIMATE METHODS AND ASTRONOMICAL APPLICATIONS).

Abstract

Methods for approximate calculations of the non-uniform propagation behavior of shock discontinuities are examined and compared with numerical methods. The object is to delineate and explain the basic physical properties of non-uniform shock wave propagation, to provide a basis for the interpretation of numerical solutions, and to evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of the approximate methods. Astronomical applications are also discussed. (Author)
