GLASS FIBER CORD AIRCRAFT TIRE.

Abstract

The overall objective of this effort was to develop the techniques necessary to construct aircraft tires using glass fiber cord as a basic tire structural material. The tires were counterpart to Type VII, M-T.T, 34 X 9.9, which is an extra high pressure tire. The project tires were of radial ply design with glass fiber cord in both the carcass and belt plies. In order to protect the glass cord filaments from interfilament chafing and to provide for bonding the tire rubber to the cord, the glass filaments were specially sized and coated with elastomer composition before the cords were formed. The work program of the contract was divided into four phases: glass cord design work on a laboratory test scale, glass cord development on a laboratory and tire test scale, prototype tire construction and static tire tests, and dynamic tire tests.
