RECORDING STRESS WAVES INDUCED BY A LASER BEAM,
Abstract
Piezoelectric transducers were used to investigate the effect on a metal of free-running laser pulses with energies of from 10-15 joules. The cadmium samples had a diameter of 10 mm and a height of 3 mm. The laser beam was focused in the center of the target using a lens with a focal length of 250 mm. An individual burst of radiation of short duration (approximately 1 microsecond) brings about a pressure pulse in the target. This pressure pulse causes an electric voltage pulse, in the electrodes of the transducer, which is recorded in an oscillograph. Analysis of the propagation of the stress waves in the piezoelectric transducer and of the formation of the charge permits an approximate calculation of the shape of the initial pressure pulse in the target. The experimental results show qualitative agreement with results obtained using the optical polarization method.
