SPEECH PERCEPTION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF APPROPRIATE NONMETRIC ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

The research concerns the study of speech perception with special emphasis on individual differences among listeners. Several analyses of judgments of speech quality were made with a view to finding psychoacoustic relationships between judgments and physical properties of the speech signal, and a new nonmetric multidimensional scaling technique was developed. This technique, 'elastic' multidimensional scaling (EMD), proved to be useful in answering some of the questions concerning individual differences. In addition, two studies were performed with a view to identification of vowels and voices on the basis of physical information alone. Canonical correlation and multiple discriminant analysis techniques were used in these studies. User manuals for EMD and its extension CEMD are contained in the report (as FORTRAN IV listings with examples of output and other user information). (Author)
