REFRACTIVE INDEX SOUNDING SYSTEM (RISS).

Abstract

The document describes the design, development, and test of a digital meteorological sounding system called the Refractive Index Sounding System (RISS). This system obtains meteorological data in the form of temperature, pressure, and humidity and digitizes this data for subsequent transmission over a High Frequency Radio Communications Link to a central computer site where the data is utilized for index of refraction (IOR) computations. A brief discussion is contained outlining the program purpose and requirements and a summary is included which describes the various changes in these requirements as the program evolved. The various equipments comprising the system are discussed in detail and a systems analysis is presented which discusses the various requirements and parameters necessary for an IOR determination. A systems error analysis is also included. System test data obtained during laboratory and field tests along with an evaluation of this data is included as a means of determining the systems capability and performance characteristics. A conclusion reached as a result of the text and evaluation of the system is that RISS met essentially all of the operational and performance requirements, but that the radiosonde sensors still need improvement. The sensors are the limiting factors in obtaining the desired IOR accuracy. (Author)
