UNLOADING AND HEATING OF NON-METALLIC CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS UNDER WINTER CONDITIONS,

Abstract

The freezing of bulk construction materials such as sand, gravel, cement, etc. in rolling stock and storage piles is a great problem under Soviet winter conditions. The book discusses methods of: (1) preventing the freezing by drying, chemical treatment, etc; (2) thawing of frozen material by chamber heating, steam injection, infra-red and HF electromagnetic heating; and (3) restoration of looseness to bulk material without thawing, by vibration, hammering, pick penetration, explosive shock, etc. Both Soviet and American experience are summarized. Diagrams and photographs of equipment are presented. A 53 item bibliography is included. (Author)
