NEW PHYSICAL EFFECTS,

Abstract

A semipopular discussion is given of new physical effects, the discovery of which was induced by the appearance of lasers. The majority of these effects pertain to the area of so-called nonlinear optics - optics of media, the properties of which can change under action of the field of radiation itself. Such changes become noticeably only at large intensities of radiation; at small intensities the properties of media change insignificantly and processes occurring in them obey the laws of conventional (linear) optics.
