ESTIMATING NUMERICAL PARAMETERS BY INFORMATION OF THE 'SPECIALIST'S KNOWLEDGE' TYPE,

Abstract

Various engineering problems (e.g. design of new machinery, selection of the first approximation in iterative calculations) require the approximate determination of certain parameters other than the specified parameters. The experts in the technical fields concerned usually are familiar with specific probabilistic and functional relationships between parameters and can draw on their memories of previously encountered situations. But the estimation of parameters often involves ponderous calculations and hence the article deals with the utilization of expert's knowledge of this kind to perform estimates by means of a computer. The pertinent algorithm is compiled on the basis of the division of the space of situations by means of parallel coordinate hyperplanes into a number of regions.
