SERUM AGGLUTINATORS REACTING WITH PEPSIN TREATED GAMMA-GLOBULIN: I. 'NATURALLY OCCURRING' REACTANTS IN THE SERUM OF SUBHUMAN PRIMATES

Abstract

The sera of subhuman primates were found to contain anti-gamma globulins directed against pepsin revealed antigens of primate immunoglobulin. These reactants were compared to similar antibodies of human serum and showed striking similarities in specificity and immunochemical characteristics. Further, both human and subhuman 'pepsin agglutinators' were widely distributed and 'autoreactive.' Attempts to induce formation of alteration of the titer of these antibodies in monkeys by hyperimmunization were unsuccessful.
