MILITARY FIELD VISUALIZATION OF REAL-TIME INTRA-ORAL FLUOROSCOPIC IMAGES AT REDUCED X-RAY EXPOSURES.
Abstract
An oral image intensifier with peripheral equipment has been designed and prototyped. The device utilizes a small number of short X-ray pulses which form an image inside the mouth on a phosphor covering the end of a fiber optic bundle. The fiber optic bundle is curved and carries the low light level image outside of the mouth to a small image intensifier, which amplifies the image to a visual level. A closed circuit TV system further amplifies the image and presents it on a monitor. A video disc recorder is used to freeze the image and lengthen it sufficiently for analysis without further X-ray exposure. This is the first time an intra-oral fluoroscope has been developed. The device will be useful in military field activities and also in effecting intra-oral fluoroscopy at radiation doses much lower than those associated with present intra-oral radiography. The system may also be used extra-orally. (Author)
