ATLAS OF ASIA AND EASTERN EUROPE TO SUPPORT DETECTION OF UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR TESTING. VOLUME V. CRUST AND MANTLE CONDITIONS,

Abstract

The purpose of Volume V is to present a scheme for the crustal structure of Asia and Eastern Europe compatible with the results of published deep seismic-refraction studies and with geologic and physiographic information found in Volume I and Volume II of this atlas. The possibility of constructing a map of crustal thickness based entirely on information obtained through seismic sounding is precluded by the vastness of the area under consideration. Despite an ambitious program of deep seismic sounding undertaken by Soviet scientists in recent years, most of the U.S.S.R. and virtually all of China remain uninvestigated. In order to approximate the structure of the crust in these areas, it has been necessary to correlate the results of seismic studies with the geology and tectonics of a region and extend the information gleaned from recorded profiles into areas where no seismic control is available.
