THE PROPOSED HELIOGRAPHIC LATITUDE DEPENDENCE OF THE DOMINANT POLARITY OF THE INTERPLANETARY MAGNETIC FIELD.

Abstract

Rosenberg and Coleman have proposed that the dominant polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field observed near the earth is related to the heliographic latitude of the earth and to the polarity of the sun's polar magnetic fields. In some cases the pattern of the observed photospheric field at equatorial latitudes can furnish an alternate explanation for the dominant polarity effect. During several consecutive solar rotations the observed photospheric field is predominantly outward at most latitudes and longitudes, and the interplanetary field polarity observed near the ecliptic is predominantly away from the sun. A test of the proposed effect using simultaneous observations of spacecraft widely separated in heliographic longitude is discussed. (Author)
