STABILITY ANALYSIS IN DISCRETE MECHANICS.

Abstract

Greenspan has developed a discrete version of Newtonian mechanics, called discrete mechanics, which he has used to derive finite difference approximations to nonlinear problems in mechanics. The stability of one of these finite difference approximations is analyzed in detail using the 'energy method'. It is found that the theoretical stability limit agrees exactly with the stability limit observed experimentally. (Author)
