ON THE SURFACE-WAVE PROBLEM FOR SUBMERGED OBJECTS IN STEADY FLOW.
Abstract
An investigation was made of the surface-wave solutions for a submerged object in steady flow. Empirical results are given which suggest that non-linear effects are significant in two-dimensional flow (as had been indicated by some recent work in the literature), but that these effects are much less significant in three-dimensional potential flow for a bounded object. Hence, a computer program for surface waves, based on the linearized three-dimensional solution, appears adequate for its intended use in ship wave resistance calculations. A theoretical analysis of the published two-dimensional non-linear solutions gives a satisfactory explanation of their apparently anomalous behavior. However, analytical difficulties still remain in the non-linear theory for submerged objects, and some suggestions for further investigation have been included in this report. (Author)
