SCRATCH STRAIN GAGE EVALUATION

Abstract

The test results on the evaluation of the Prewitt Scratch Strain Gage are presented in the report. The test program was twofold: (1) observation of the gage operation under various strain applications and (2) investigation of strain recording sensitivity and measurement. The scratch strain gage as tests indicated is a feasible and accurate means of recording strains of a character and magnitude expected to be found in a typical aircraft structure. The recording sensitivity is controlled by proper installation techniques and gage length. For the laboratory conditions reported, the measured strains were equivalent to the electrical resistance gages within 100 micro strain.
