PLASTIC FLOW AND THE STRESS CONCENTRATION IN MILD STEEL SPECIMENS.

Abstract

Three types of mild steel sheet and one type of round specimens were used to investigate the applicability of some published methods of assessing the plastic stress concentration factor. A comparison between the experimental values of these factors, obtained by means of miniature strain gauges located in the root of the notch, and the calculated ones showed that none of the methods gives reasonably accurate results. Furthermore, the value of the plastic stress concentration factor changes under cyclic load, being different in tension and compression. The direction of the first quarter of a cycle which makes the material yield seems to be the main influencing factor. The compressive start is always more damaging because it leaves the stress concentration effects in tension and washes them out in compression. (Author)
