THE MICROSTRUCTURAL APPEARANCE OF THE DISCONTINUITY IN MILD STEEL.

Abstract

The report is concerned with the metallographic characteristics of the discontinuity in the S/N curve of notched mild steel specimens, the discontinuity being associated with plastic yielding at the notch and a change in crack paths from transgranular cracking below to inter-transgranular cracking above it. Detailed studies of the microstructures associated with plastic deformation in monotonic straining was undertaken to provide an explanation for the changes observed at the discontinuity. Theories are submitted to explain both the change in crack paths and the shift in endurances at the discontinuity. (Author)
