WAKE RECIRCULATIONS GENERATED BY FLOWS (M GREATER THAN 1) OVER REARWARD FACING STEPS.

Abstract

A qualitative study is made of the recirculation wake generated by a supersonic flow over a rearward facing step. The setting consists of a primary and secondary core flow of constant density (confirmed by measured small temperature variations) and constant velocity. The core flows are surrounded by shear layers which are boundary layers when adjacent to fixed surfaces and so-called free layers when they interface with over flows. Pressure and velocity distributions are computed for both the core flows and the shear layers. Special cases are worked out with the aid of experimental data backgrounds. For these special cases, estimates are made of core vorticity and shear layer thicknesses. (Author)
