TOPICS IN COMPUTER COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS.
Abstract
This report surveys several aspects of data communications systems applicable to timesharing utilities. Topics presented include propagation characteristics of the telephone network and comparisons of the various modulation techniques suitable for use on this network. A description of several types of coding systems is presented and various aspects of these systems are studied, including those of synchronization and graphic/control-function interchange assignments. A detailed description of a proposal for a half-duplex processor-processor communication link protocol is presented to illustrate the problems in a practical design. Finally, a brief description of the operation of certain types of popular terminals and terminal control units is presented, along with a description of a special terminal control unit constructed by the University staff. An extensive bibliography is included. (Author)
