INVESTIGATION OF REQUIREMENTS FOR A MATERIALS LABORATORY HYPER-ENVIRONMENTS TEST FACILITY.

Abstract

A Materials Laboratory Hyper-Environments Facility which can perform physical tests on materials in the presence of many hyper-environments is outlined in this report. The background of each natural and induced hyper-environment is given with emphasis on its relationship to materials. Methods for simulating the environment are discussed. Most of the standard physical tests currently performed on materials are listed with various means for accomplishing each test. Finally, recommendations are made for each unit-facility which can perform a physical test concurrent with many of the hyper-environments. Consideration is given to the requirements of each unit-facility as to the costs, area required, personnel, power, and supporting needs. The following individual facilities are included in the over-all facility: Physical properties laboratory for metals; Physical properties laboratory for non-metals; Thermal properties laboratory; Mechanical properties laboratory; Plasma jet laboratory; High speed particles laboratory; Lubricant testing laboratory; Machine shop; Instrumentation laboratory; Environmental storage room.
