REGULATION OF GREAT LAKES LEVELS AND FLOWS,

Abstract

The paper presents a brief description of the physical characteristics as well as the hydraulics and hydrology of the Great Lakes system. Included are tables of average lake levels, outflows, runoff, precipitation and evaporation. The rule-and-limitation approach to regulation plan development (a plan tailored to the past sequence of water supplies) and the probabilistic or stochastic approach (a plan which gives consideration to the variability of future water supplies) are described and compared. The paper includes a description and samples of the regulation plans presently in operation on Lakes Superior and Ontario. (Author)
