INVESTIGATION OF THE USE OF AIRJETS AND CHINES ON AIRCRAFT UNDERCARRIAGES USING MODEL WHEELS AND A MOVING GROUND-BELT AND WATER layer.

Abstract

Tests were carried out on airjets ahead of 9 in. and 14 in. wheels in water layers up to 0.5 in. deep. The configuration and position of the jets was optimised and their effect on drag, aquaplaning velocity and spray was measured. It was concluded that airjets would be a practical and efficient device for aircraft if the difficulties of installation could be overcome. Various chine shapes were tested on the side of an 8 in. solid wheel for their effectiveness in spray deflection. The best chine shapes might not be practical due to their width but could be fitted to a small highly loaded wheel ahead of the main wheel and would delay aquaplaning as well as reduce spray height.
