VACUUM TUBE RESEARCH PROJECT.

Abstract

Langmuir probe measurements were made of the electron density in the plasma column and are in fair agreement with previous work. An experiment was carried out concerning the double resonance in the scattering of a wave from a plasma column whose electric vector is transverse to the column axis. Experimental verification of 'structureless' backward waves in a plasma-filled waveguide was made. A field analysis for the interaction of an electron beam and plasma was carried out and the result is in agreement with the approximate interaction impedance calculation. Start oscillation current for backward wave interaction between a beam and a plasma was calculated. Noise in multivelocity electron beams was studied using moments of the velocity distribution. When velocity distribution effects are included in the adiabatic approximation a kinetic power theorem is obtained and it was shown that the noise power flowing along the beam is not zero. (Author)
