A REPORT ON R/V CHAIN CRUISE 89, MARCH AND APRIL 1969. SOUND VELOCITY PROFILES.

Abstract

On Cruise No. 89 of R/V CHAIN from 11 March 1969 to 10 April 1969 approximately sixty sound velocity profiles, SVP No. 625 to SVP No. 685 were obtained in the ocean south and southwest of Bermuda. Some of these profiles are at the same stations visited on Cruise No. 22 of R/V ATLANTIS II in June-August 1966. Tests on a deep hydrophone system and a preliminary study of the use of sound signals to monitor the time variation in sound velocity in the ocean were also made. An evaluation of the sound velocity profiling equipment designed jointly by WHOI and the Sylvania Corporation under shipboard conditions was obtained. Final plots of the measurements were available immediately during the cruise. (Author)
