PROBLEM-SOLVING PROCESSES IN PLANNING AND DESIGN,

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to open discussion in the design professions about the nature of problem-solving processes in planning and design. First, it will discuss some of the issues which must be addressed in developing an appropriate theory and will frame these issues with an example. Then, it will outline a model of a problem-solving process and discuss briefly the principles underlying this concept. The objective is to develop a theory which can be implemented and which can be useful, in developing an interrelated system of computer programs for addressing a broad spectrum of design and planning problems in civil engineering, in soils, structures, water resources, transportation and other areas.
