OBSERVATIONS ON A VISCOSEAL IN A TRANSPARENT HOUSING. THE PREVENTION OF LEAKAGE AND BREAKDOWN,

Abstract

An effort was made to solve the leakage and breakdown problems of shaft viscoseals by visual observations through a transparent housing. The influence of the geometry of the seal on gas inclusion is studied as well as the influence of gas inclusion upon sealing effectiveness. It is found that leakage may be prevented by the installation on the shaft of bushings that have a small radial clearance and by the installation of a recirculation system for enclosed gas. Design of a shaft viscoseal that tends to prevent gas inclusion is developed.
