OPTIMAL CONTROL PROFILE SPECIFICATION FOR BOUNDARY VALUE SYSTEMS.

Abstract

The specification of the space-wise control profile to maximize a performance index for a distributed second order system with boundary conditions is achieved by reduction to a first order system with inequality constraints as terminal conditions and the application of a maximum principle formulation. Computation of the temperature profile to maximize intermediate product yield in a reactor with axial mixing is illustrated. Modified methods based upon the gradient of the Hamiltonian have been found to be highly effective for making successive approximations to the control profile. (Author)
