OPTIMAL PURSUIT IN THE HORIZONTAL PLANE,

Abstract

This article represents a mathematical analysis of the motion of two aircraft, one being pursued and the other in pursuit, and of the relationships between their trajectories. The conditions under which the trajectory of the pursuit will lead to contact with the target, and the conditions under which contact will not occur are described mathematically. The trajectories of the aircraft are assumed to be rectilinear. The methods for controlling the trajectory of the pursuit craft are expressed mathematically with the condition of arbitrary thrust constant of the engines and in consideration of the fuel reserves required to accomplish the maneuver.
