FUNDAMENTAL PROCESSESS IN GASEOUS REACTIONS.

Abstract

Fundamental processes in gas phase reactions (primarily decomposition and recombination reactions of simple diatomic and triatomic molecules) were studied using shock wave techniques. The investigation of energy transfer processes covered more areas: laser chemistry and vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. A vacuum UV monochromator was designed and constructed in the laboratory, and a quadrupole mass spectrometer added later for use in studying pre-ionization and fragmentation of molecules which had absorbed high energy light. Laser photochemistry was shown to be an interesting and powerful technique for exciting molecules, and several two-photon absorptions leading to chemical reactions were demonstrated. (Author)
