CAPACITOR FAILURES - RADIO SET AN/VRC-12.

Abstract

Failures of capacitors in Radio Set AN/VRC-12 power supplies during service test are discussed. A failure mode analysis identifies the cause of failure and corrective action is presented. The proposed solution replaces the faulty transient suppressor capacitor with zener diode voltage clamps in the 400 Hz inverter circuit. Removal of the capacitor necessitates modification of the power transformer design to compensate for a change in circuit switching frequency. The proposed solution removes the source of trouble and improves system performance and reliability. (Author)
