FIBER OPTICS WITH EXTENDED ULTRAVIOLET TRANSMISSION.

Abstract

The objective of this contract is to conduct research and development leading to the fabrication of fiber-optic faceplates for cathode ray tubes with high transmission in the near and middle ultraviolet spectral regions. During this period, studies were primarily conducted to further improve the transmission properties of the optical glasses being developed and to gain a better understanding of the fundamental theories relating to uv absorption. Compositional studies included the use of acidity control and redox oxide additions. Processing studies included time, temperature, atmosphere, and stirring effects. Mass spectrographic analyses were conducted to determine impurities in selected glasses. (Author)
