SCHISTOSOMIASIS IN THAILAND, STUDIES ON THE INCIDENCE, EPIDEMIOLOGY, LIFE CYCLES, AND ITS CAUSING CERCARIAL DERMATITIS.

Abstract

Surveys on schistosomiasis cases in Nakorn-phanom province of Northeast Thailand and Thakhek district of Laos along the Mekong River were made on 533 people; none gave positive demonstration of the eggs of S.japonicum in the faeces. With regards to schistosomiasis in South Thailand, no new case was found; vector snails also have not yet been discovered. Mice could develop some extent of immunity against S.spindale if they had been exposed to cercariae of the homologous strain of schistosome. The cercariae of S.incognitum caused mild dermatitis in man. The rodents of Khon Kaen province of Northeast Thailand were found to be the reservoir hosts of this parasite. (Author)
