Fluorescent Antibody Test in the Measurement of Malarial Endemicity,
Abstract
An investigation was conducted with the primary purpose of determining whether antibody titers to malaria assessed by the indirect fluorescent antibody test will result to a better measurement of malarial endemicity. Clinical data, splenic enlargement and blood samples were taken from residents in four areas classified as malarious and non-malarious. Analysis of results showed an association between parasite rate and positivity to FA tests and a similar relationship is indicated between parasite rate and the geometric mean of the reciprocal of the titer (GMRT). There is an indication that the inclusion of quantitative assay of antibody in residents of endemic area may result to a better assessment of malarial endemicity. Positive FA responses were seen in residents of a considered non-malarious area. No correlation between density of parasitemia, degree of splenomegaly and FA titer was observed. (Author)
